How to Clean Up Google Photos Fast (Without Losing Anything Important)
The Problem: Photo Hoarding
We all do it. Every screenshot, every burst of 14 nearly-identical shots, every accidental photo of your pocket — they all end up in Google Photos. Before you know it, you've got 10,000+ photos and no idea what's worth keeping.
Google gives you 15GB of free storage shared across Gmail, Drive, and Photos. Once that fills up, you're paying for Google One or desperately deleting things one by one.
Why Manual Cleanup Doesn't Work
The built-in Google Photos interface isn't designed for bulk cleanup. You can:
- Delete photos one at a time (painfully slow)
- Select multiple photos by clicking each one (still slow)
- Search for specific things (but you don't know what to search for)
There's no "show me everything I probably don't need" button. No way to quickly review and decide on each photo.
A Better Approach: Swipe to Decide
SwipeOut brings the swipe-to-decide pattern to Google Photos. Instead of clicking through photos one by one, you see each photo full-screen and make a quick decision:
- Swipe left (or press A) to mark for deletion
- Swipe right (or press D) to keep
- Undo anytime with Ctrl+Z
After reviewing, you see everything you marked in a grid and confirm before anything gets deleted.
Smart Filters Save Time
Before you start swiping, you can narrow down what you're reviewing:
- Media type — focus on just photos, just videos, or both
- Date range — clean up that 2019 holiday folder without touching recent photos
- Sort order — start with oldest (the stuff you've forgotten about) or newest
Nothing Is Permanent
Everything SwipeOut deletes goes to Google Photos trash, where it stays for 60 days. You can restore anything during that period. Nothing is permanently deleted until Google's 60-day window expires.
Getting Started
